Kick-off.\u00a0Boninsegna gets the ball rolling.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>12:18 pm. Receiving Tost\u00e3o\u2019s throw in, Rivelino leans back and loops a high cross into the box. Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pel\u00e9, is inside the penalty box and foresees the cross coming. Italy&#8217;s\u00a0Tarcisio Burgnich is there as well though. Burgnich is\u00a0a strong, large, quick, and energetic player, regarded as one of the greatest Italian defenders of his time; his ability in the air, imposing physique, consistency, and his aggressive, efficient playing style earned him the nickname &#8220;La Roccia&#8221; (The Rock), despite not being particularly tall (anyway taller than Pel\u00e9).<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>More than 700 headed goals to date<\/h2>\n<p>More than 700 goals have been scored through headers in the top 5 leagues to date, representing 17% of the total goals scored. The German Bundesliga (&#8216;GB&#8217;) has seen the highest number of headed goals per match so far (0.5), while the French Ligue 1 (&#8216;FL1&#8217;) displays the highest incidence of headed goals on total (18.3%).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5010\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/soccerment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Soccerment_HeadedGoalsPerMatch_Percentage_by_League.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5010\" src=\"https:\/\/soccerment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Soccerment_HeadedGoalsPerMatch_Percentage_by_League-1024x623.png\" alt=\"Headed goals per match and percentage of headers on total goals\" width=\"1024\" height=\"623\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exhibit 1: Headed goals per match and percentage of headers on total goals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The team scoring the highest number of headed goals is Bayern Munich (16). However, if we look at the percentage on total goals, Cagliari (Serie A) beat them all: 14 headers out of 31 goals (45%). However, the Italian team has only scored 5 headed goals more than Bar\u00e7a: 11 vs 6.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the number of attempted crosses and the number of headed goals do not show a strong correlation (R-squared of 0.17).<\/p>\n<p>We are not fond of crossing and believe it is an ineffective strategy. There are three main skills that a player must have: timing, elevation and coordination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timing<\/strong>: The player needs to be in the right place at the right time and the trajectories originating from crosses or corners are not (always) easily predictable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Jumping reach<\/b>: Height helps, but without a good jumping reach, the amount of headers could be limited. &#8220;<em>Explosive strength is fundamental for a soccer player to obtain the jump necessary to head the ball<\/em>&#8221; (&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/230577562_Training_the_Vertical_Jump_to_Head_the_Ball_in_Soccer\">Training the Vertical Jump to Head the Ball in Soccer<\/a>&#8216;, A. Paoli, A. Bianco, A. Palma, G. Marcolin).<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4achmhzLNoY?t=709\">this video<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.soccerment.com\/player?player=cristiano-ronaldo-1985-02-05\">Cristiano Ronaldo<\/a> jumps 44cm from a standing position and 78cm with a run-up, 7cm more than the average NBA player.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coordination<\/strong>: To successfully direct a header &#8211; while clashing in the air with an opponent &#8211; and do it with the correct power, requires having a good coordination, combined with a good spatial awareness.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Interested in football stats? <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.soccerment.com\/register\">Sign up for free to Soccerment Analytics<\/a> and start analysing football players and teams through intuitive data visualisation and innovative performance indicators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Data related to head shots: quantity and quality are both important<\/h2>\n<p>The data relating to the heading ability, such as the number of headers that a player has taken over a certain period and the quality of those headers (goal conversion, typically) stem from the three aforementioned skills.<\/p>\n<p>In this analysis, we assess the heading ability using a simple but effective tool: <strong>we plot the number of Expected Goals (&#8216;xG&#8217;) emerging from the headers and the number of the headed goals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To allow the comparability among players, we rebase all data per 90 minutes. We use all the available league data (top 5 leagues only) over the past five years. The dataset is of slightly less than 300 players, consisting of the forwards, midfielders and defenders showing the highest number of headed shots and goals, relatively to their roles. We filter out the players totalling less than 1500 minutes played.<\/p>\n<p>Here below, the resulting aggregated chart. Three names are worth of mention: <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.soccerment.com\/player?player=olivier-giroud-1986-09-30\">Olivier Giroud<\/a> of Chelsea, <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.soccerment.com\/player?player=leonardo-pavoletti-1988-11-26\">Leonardo Pavoletti<\/a> of Cagliari and <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.soccerment.com\/player?player=guido-carrillo-1991-05-25\">Guido Carrillo<\/a> of Leganes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5029\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5029\" style=\"width: 949px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/soccerment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Soccerment_Headers_xG-G_P90.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5029\" src=\"https:\/\/soccerment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Soccerment_Headers_xG-G_P90.png\" alt=\"Headers xG and Goals P90\" width=\"949\" height=\"945\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5029\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exhibit 4: Headers xG and Goals P90<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Top heading defenders: Willy and Willi<\/h2>\n<p>We zoom onto defenders, by changing the scale of the chart: whilst the forwards in our dataset average 0.09 xG per 90 minutes from headers, the defenders average 0.04 xG P90.<\/p>\n<p>We were expecting Sergio Ramos and Gerard Piqu\u00e9 to easily win the contest among defenders. Instead, two other players come up as the best performers on heading: <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.soccerment.com\/player?player=willy-boly-1991-02-03\">Willy<strong> Boly<\/strong><\/a> (Wolverhampton) and <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.soccerment.com\/player?player=willi-orban-1992-11-03\">Willi<strong> Orban<\/strong><\/a> (RB Leipzig).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Interested in football stats? <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.soccerment.com\/register\">Sign up for free to Soccerment Analytics<\/a> and start analysing football players and teams through intuitive data visualisation and innovative performance indicators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The French defender <strong>Willy<\/strong> <strong>Boly<\/strong>, 28 years old, has made 31 appearances in the ongoing EPL, scoring 4 goals, of which 3 through headers. He is 195cm tall and weighs 92kg, which helps&#8230; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QiqR2lFT1gA\">it helped him here, in particular<\/a>). He has totalled 0.06 xG from headers P90 this season, and 0.10 headed goals P90.<\/p>\n<p>The Hungarian defender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rh3zg4hkCVA\"><strong>Willi<\/strong> <strong>Orban<\/strong><\/a>, 26 years old, has scored 4 goals in the current Bundesliga, of which 2 headers. The versatile Englishman is not particularly tall (180cm), but shows a great timing on the ball (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NSUE9gwp_Qc\">especially, but not only, on set pieces<\/a>). He has averaged 0.22 headed goals per 90 minutes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Interested in football stats? <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.soccerment.com\/register\">Sign up for free to Soccerment Analytics<\/a> and start analysing football players and teams through intuitive data visualisation and innovative performance indicators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In our dataset, the three forwards with the highest number of headed goals per 90 minutes are<strong>\u00a0Olivier Giroud<\/strong> (Chelsea), <strong>Leonardo Pavoletti<\/strong> (Cagliari) and <strong>Guido Carrillo<\/strong> (Leganes).<\/p>\n<p>They show up as the most proficient forwards on headers. They average 190cm of height\u00a0and are able to often find themselves in the situation of heading the ball towards the opponent&#8217;s goal, outperforming the probability of scoring from those situations.<\/p>\n<p>The French striker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jozrBNen13E\"><strong>Olivier Giroud<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(32) has scored 22 headed goals in the Premier League since 2014\/15. Headed goals represented 43% of his total goals, while headers represented 39% of his total shots. In five seasons, Giroud has averaged 0.28 headed goals per 90 minutes, out of 0.17 xG P90.<\/p>\n<p>If Cagliari has scored 45% of their goals from headers this season, it is mainly due to one man: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t_reSf_OavM&amp;t=42s\"><strong>Leonardo Pavoletti<\/strong><\/a>. The 30-year-old forward, ex Napoli, Genoa and Sassuolo, has already scored 9 goals through headers this year in the Italian Serie A (&#8216;ISA&#8217;). Most importantly, over the past five years, more than half of his goals were from headers: 24 out of 47. Pavoletti has averaged 0.26 headed goals per 90 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UZrxkVLdA4Y\"><strong>Guido Carrillo<\/strong><\/a> (27), on loan to Leganes from Southampton, has scored 12 headed goals in four seasons in the top 5 leagues: 10 when at Monaco and 2 this year for Leganes. Headed goals represent 57% of his total. Pel\u00e9 focuses on it and prepares to jump.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>Pel\u00e9 makes the first move, jumping earlier than Burgnich. It is a risky decision. If he anticipated the movement only slightly, the defender&#8217;s jump would end up peaking at just the right time. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Pel\u00e9 has two advantages though: first, he is facing Italy&#8217;s goal, while Burgnich is running backward; secondly, somehow, for a fraction of a second, he defies gravity and hangs in the air. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Finally, the ball arrives.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;<\/i><strong><em>O Rei&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><i>\u00a0hits a majestic header into the bottom right. The Italian goalkeeper Albertosi is late to react.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>Goal. 1-0.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It is Brazil&#8217;s 100th goal in a World Cup.
